Imagine a living aircraft carrier that when it died released a bunch of little flying monsters and then imagine you could turn that walking carrier into a giant indestructible monster! Well that’s precisely what you can do with today’s card: Hangarback Walker. Hangarback Walker is an Artifact Creature card that has a double “X” cost. This means that the two “X’s” must be equal to cast it, as an example if you make both of the “X” 1 mana each, then it will cost 2 mana total to cast it and so on. Where this double cast cost comes in is when the creature enters the battlefield with “X” +1/+1 counters. This means if you do 1 for each “X” then it comes in with a single +1/+1 counter. So with certain mana combos or just a lot of spendable mana this guy can be pretty big when cast.
Another ability this guy has is the activated ability to pay 1 mana and tap it to add a +1/+1 counter. This ability has the potential to be abused, as I have mentioned in previous articles certain cards affect artifacts in ways of doubling those counters every time, as well as the ability to untap artifacts and get multiple counters in one turn or even on your opponent’s turns.
Lastly, if and when this guy gets taken down, he releases a number of 1/1 Artifact creature tokens on the battlefield and they all have flying which can pass over a lot of the enemies defenses giving a potentially deadly swarm of Thopters headed straight at them. There are many decks that work around generating tokens and making more and more come into play.
That’s the MTG Card of the Day, I hope you guys enjoyed it, make sure to check out the other cards we’ve talked about. Also, if you haven’t gotten into Magic: The Gathering and are interested, the internet is a great tool, but nothing beats the support of your local game store!
